Job Title: Chief Executive Officer
Introduction
The Molteno Institute for Language and Literacies NPC is looking to appoint an experienced Chief Executive Officer. The position is based at the Molteno Head Office in Parktown, Johannesburg.
Position purpose
The role of the CEO is to provide overall strategic direction, leadership, and effective management of Molteno Institute within guidelines set by the Board of Directors, through:
- Leading the process of developing an organizational strategy in line with the Board’s vision and approved company budget.
- Acting as a liaison between the Board, management, and key financial and beneficiary stakeholders, as well as other relevant stakeholders.
- Acting as an accounting and Public Officer for the company.
- Managing and leading Board-approved organizational transformation processes regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, culture, and financial service.
- Managing and leading employees and ensuring the achievement of Molteno Institute’s approved strategy.
Duties & Responsibilities
Key performance areas and Accountabilities
Sound and good corporate governance
- Ensure effective implementation of decisions of the Board.
- Ensure effective meetings of financial stakeholder expectations and associated reporting requirements.
- Provide input and guidance to Board and Board Committees to facilitate effective strategic decision-making.
- Report to Board, Board Committees, and financial stakeholders on Molteno Institute’s environmental, social, and governance performance.
- Ensure that the immediate and broader business environment is constantly assessed in order to identify micro and macro issues impacting (or likely to impact) the organization, and to inform the Board thereof.
- Ensure that the Board is supported with advice, research, and insights, planning, co-ordination, monitoring and evaluation of services for the achievement of Molteno Institute’s strategic objectives.
Strategy development and implementation, and budgeting
- Develop and monitor long-term and short-term objectives, policies, budgets and operating plans for Molteno Institute, in alignment with relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Plan, direct, control and monitor operational activities of the organisation to ensure effective performance against approved strategic objectives of the organisation.
- Set the programming vision of the organization and lead Programme Managers to implement the vision in an agile, yet sustainable and economically prudent, fashion.
- Ensure alignment of strategy amongst employees and stakeholders.
- Agree, manage and oversee the business plan for funding cycles in terms of the Service Level Agreement with each donor/funder.
- Ensure the alignment of Molteno Institute’s strategy planning and development to the Budget/Expenditure Framework and other relevant legislative requirements, government programmes and plans.
- Monitor and review strategic plans consistently and take corrective measures to keep plans on track in light of new challenges.
- Drive excellent results and deliver core strategies and objectives aligned to the organization’s business plan and approved budgets.
- Define the required organizational structure to support the strategic plan of the organization.
Lead and manage the operations of the organization
- Develop and manage the approved budget for the organisation.
- Steer the organisation creatively in line with a well-defined and articulated programming vision.
- Ensure effective and efficient use of resources of the company – physical, human and financial.
- Facilitate synergies amongst the various activities and projects within the organisation for sustainability and growth.
Reporting and statutory compliance
- Report to financial stakeholders on all relevant information regarding the organisation’s activities and develop and present alternatives and recommended courses of action to the Board for its consideration.
- Report to the Board and relevant stakeholders on the achievements of Molteno Institute as set out in the business plan and the Service Level Agreement with each donor/funder and/or its successor.
Management of strategic partnerships
- Identify key areas of focus for the ongoing growth and development of the business of the organisation.
- Develop and maintain strategic and appropriate collaborations, alliances and/or partnerships which support the efficient, optimal functioning of Molteno Institute, including but not limited to regulatory and professional bodies within the sector.
- Represent Molteno Institute in various fora and/or delegate representation accordingly.
Management of resources (physical, human and financial)
- Oversee development and maintenance of the organisation’s values and a healthy culture.
- Attract, develop and retain human capital talent committed to delivering Molteno Institute’s objectives.
- Secure financial resources and manage and control same effectively to optimise the performance and sustainability of the organisation.
- Oversee policies, budgets and operating plans aligned to legal and mandatory requirements and ensure strict corporate governance in furtherance of the credibility of the organisation.
- Ensure sound management and administration which promotes organisational growth and sustainability.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Job qualification requirements
- A relevant postgraduate education or project management qualification and/or project management certification
- A master’s degree would be an added advantage
- A professional qualification in language and literacy pedagogy would be an added advantage
- 8–10 years’ experience at a senior leadership and executive level in the basic education sector
- 8–10 years’ experience within the education NPO/NPC/Development/Project environment
Key competency requirements
- Extensive experience in strategic planning and execution
- Extensive experience in operating at Board and executive levels
- Sound knowledge and extensive management experience, specifically in Early Childhood Development (ECD) and/or primary school programme management
- Extensive experience in high-level communication including external stakeholder and media engagement
- Experience in proposal and high-level report writing
- Extensive experience in stakeholder management, reporting and networking
- High-level knowledge and experience of the not-for-profit business environment, legal requirements and a basic understanding of NPC/NPO reporting requirements
- Experience in fund-raising, and understanding of local and international funders’ expectations and reporting requirements in the education sector
- Experience in working closely with the Department of Basic Education, and with provincial departments of education
- Extensive travelling
- Working outside of normal office hours
