Introduction
Walter Sisulu University is a multi-campus, comprehensive university, with its seat at its Nelson Mandela Drive campus in Mthatha. The university has four campuses in Mthatha, Butterworth, Buffalo City and Komani, which are headed by Campus Rectors. Professor P5 /Associate Professor P6: Built Environment, Permanent,

The WSU Professor is an academic with attributes as defined by the policy on academic appointments and promotions, with duties in teaching and learning, research and community engagement. The Professor is a prominent research leader with an outstanding track record and is expected to be supervising research/higher-level post-graduate students.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Contribute towards the development and implementation of Walter Sisulu University and faculty teaching, learning and research strategy.
- Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Develop research projects and research capacity within the faculty.
- Renew and develop the curriculum to align it with the emerging needs of society.
- Develop student-central teaching methodologies.
- Participate in planned and regular schedules of evaluative surveys.
- Built community engagement activities into the curriculum.
- Participation in community engagement project and build partnerships.
- Academic student development.
- Academic administration.
- Act as a study leader of student or lecturer study groups.
- Membership in professional bodies (SACQSP & SACPCMP).
- Develop and implement strategies to use ICT for teaching and learning.
- Act as external examiner for post-graduate thesis.
- Take responsibility for the allocation of fair workloads.
- Develop research projects and research capacity within the faculty.
- Improve assessment practices to meet external standards.
- Promote greater interaction with industry, business, and government to improve teaching and learning.
- Continually improve and enhance the academic support systems for students.
- Research fundraising and stewardship to donors.
- Improve throughput, retention and pass rates.
- Regularise a quality review process for all academic programmes.
- Coach/mentor researchers in view of promoting high-performance levels in post-graduate supervision.
- Ensure that researchers keep abreast with the current research standards.
Skills/ Competencies Required:
- Ability to supervise research at the postgraduate level and develop research capacity.
- Ability and willingness to undertake administrative responsibilities.
- Ability and willingness to participate in community engagement projects and related activities.
- Sound interpersonal skills including commitment to collegiality and equal opportunities.
- Good communication and people management skills.
- Technical/ professional knowledge and skill.
- Personal impact, stature and credibility.
- Computer literacy and competency in applications of Windows: Word, Excel, Power point presentation, Win QS and/ QS Plus and MS Projects.
- Mature level of emotional intelligence.
- Good resource management skills.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD Degree in Construction Management or Quantity Surveying – PhD/Doctorate to be preceded by:
- Master’s in Construction Management or Quantity Surveying and;
- Honours in Construction Management or Quantity Surveying.
Experience:
- Minimum of ten (10) years of teaching experience in a university (tertiary level) for a full Professor and 8 years of teaching experience for an Associate Professor.
- Evidence of recent conference papers (must include both local and international conferences) and peer-reviewed publications in accredited journals (a minimum of 15 published journal articles for a Professor and a minimum of 10 published journal articles for an Associate Professor).
- Evidence of supervision of completed research projects/ Dissertations at the masters level for the Associate Professor position. A minimum of 10 completed and graduated students is required.
- Evidence of supervision of completed research projects/ Thesis at the doctoral level for the Professor position. A minimum of 15 completed and graduated students is required.
- Registration with relevant Professional body/Registrable with South African professional body (SACQSP or SACPCMP).
- High academic and professional standing in the field of expertise and high academic credibility amongst peers.
- Evidence of ability to attract external funds.
- Proven record of community engagement.
- An NRF rating will be an added advantage.
