Job Title: Construction Manager
Introduction
Our company is currently recruiting for a qualified and experienced Construction Manager to join our dynamic team.
Purpose of the job:
The Construction Manager is to oversee the project schedule (timeline and cost), evaluate resource needs, coordinate with other departments including field engineering and material logistics, maintain status reports, and monitor progress compared to the established work plan. The Construction Manager has responsibility for safety, technical, contractual, budget, and schedule activities on medium to large projects. The Construction Manager may have responsibility for management and contract performance across multiple disciplines or projects. The construction Manager has Management level employees on the project as direct reports. This may include Design and Procurement but would focus on the overview of the General Contractor and the immediate construction of the project, as well as Controls. This position is client-facing and would be the direct contact as the highest ranking onsite Owners Representative with an emphasis on ensuring Schedule, Cost, Scope, and Safety.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Providing coordination and input as needed with utility companies providing services and infrastructure for the project, including schedule and cost management.
- Ensure Field Construction supervisors obtain all construction materials and material handling plans are established and managed.
- Implement the Company Quality Assurance Plans through the checking, witnessing and recording of the quality activities as described within the Plans
- Ensure that construction management is integrated into the planning, scheduling, cost tracking, construction, installation, testing, and acceptance activities
- During emergency situations, evaluate the abnormalities and take corrective action as to avoid downtime, equipment damage, and/or SHERQ incidents. Ensuring housekeeping is undertaken frequently enough to maintain a safe and neat workplace at all times.
- Ensure own team adhere to construction standards & procedures for people and plant
- Ensure construction activities planning is scheduled optimally to maximize execution output and constructability thereof.
- Provides leadership in initial planning stage by collaborating with project manager, engineers, or other involved parties; develops detailed description of jobs and materials necessary to complete project
- Schedules and coordinates projects in logical steps and budgets the time necessary to meet each deadline
- Ensures adherence to the budget and, when unexpected complications or issues arise, ensure that management is made aware of for final discussion.
- Ensures safety standards and guidelines are followed on the jobsite and that all safety codes are met in construction
- Responsible for the overall management of the project (e.g. resources, schedule) to ensure a complete solution is delivered on time and within budget
- Collaborates with clients, supervisory staff, contractors, and design professionals to discuss and resolve problems, including work procedures, complaints, and construction or design issues
- Manages and leads actions that are necessary due to delays, bad weather, or emergencies at construction sites.
- Develops and maintains good working relationships with a variety of people, including owners, managers, designers, supervisors, tradespersons, and craft workers
- Supervises each contractor and subcontractor to ensure that work meets quality standards and adheres to specifications.
- Develop, review, and evaluate contracts and agreements affecting the project execution and functional area operations and make appropriate recommendations
- Ensure that construction management is integrated into the planning, scheduling, cost tracking, construction, installation, testing, and acceptance activities
- Provide constructability feedback on electrical, mechanical, protection, and civil construction standards
- Extensive experience with construction plans and specifications, and relating that experience to project scope, schedule, and cost.
- Ability to develop and execute a testing plan for monitoring key elements of construction
- Strong knowledge of construction means and methods, standards, and code requirements
- Coordinate all construction activity to provide an effective, efficient, systematic, and sequential flow of work according to the established production schedule, start process, construction phase, and cost control.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate staff/project team, inspire teamwork and take a leadership role Lives company values and ensures compliance of team to the values
- Facilitate effective Communication up and down from management and also within own and other stakeholder teams
- Participate in the selection of staff (for own team) by being an active member on recruitment panels
- Participate (or conduct on own team) in potential deviation analysis (PDA), root cause analysis (RCA) and risk assessments
- Ensure compliance to relevant J & C Engineering procedures, policies, legislation and business processes
- Ensure adherence to SHERQ legal standards (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OSHAS 18001) and implement SHERQ processes for own area of responsibility
- Ensure that MOC process is followed, and that modified plant procedures are implemented by artisans
- Ensure resources (e.g. Materials, people) are available on site and controlled as per procedures.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 with Maths, Science, English. National Diploma/Degree in Mechanical/Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
Experience:
- Must have 10 years of construction management experience in preferably the Cement/Petrochemical/Electricity Generation field and Electrostatic Precipitators.
- Strong working knowledge in embankment construction, structural, and all other scopes for heavy Mechanical infrastructure projects.
- Extensive experience with construction plans and specifications, and relating that experience to project scope, schedule, and cost.
