In order to support the region’s budding entrepreneurial talent, Allan Gray established the Orbis Foundation in 2005 as part of his overall objective to make a lasting, sustainable contribution to Southern Africa.

In order to help future generations address historical injustices and continue Southern Africa’s economic and social transformation, the Scholarship Program aims to instill in young people an entrepreneurial mindset.

Allan Gray Orbis Foundation High School Scholarships

The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation is providing an opportunity for students to apply for the High School scholarship for the academic year of 2024.

Students in Grade 6 (entering Grade 8 in 2024) who demonstrate significant entrepreneurial abilities, excellent academics, and financial needs are eligible for the scholarship.

The recipients of the scholarship will be given a placement in the partnered schools. Here are some of the schools under the foundation, that is subjected to change:

Eligibility Criteria For The Scholarship 

Candidates must check the eligibility criteria before applying for the scholarship. There should not be any exceptions or the application will not be considered.

  • You must be a citizen of South Africa.
  • Your age must lie between the ages of 11 and 12 to participate (neither older nor younger).
  • You must be studying in Grade 6 during the 2022 school year.
  • You must start high school (Grade 8) in the 2024 school year.
  • You must have demonstrated financial need and a cumulative household income of less than R20 000 per month.
  • You must have received a minimum of 70% in English and Mathematics in Grades 5 and 6.
  • You must have received a minimum overall average of 70% in Grades 5 and 6.
  • You must have the following entrepreneurial qualities: Self-efficacy (belief in one’s own ability to achieve goals)
  • growth mindset (the belief that one’s intelligence can be developed)
  • curiosity( to explore and learn new information)
  • Problem-solving (to get out of problems or difficult situations using creative solutions)

The application can be submitted in two ways:

For applying online: candidates need to register an account and then log in to that account to apply. CLICK HERE to apply.

For applying offline: Candidates can download the application form and submit it in the following ways after completing it:

Note regarding the selection process for the scholarship:

  • Step 1: Apply (online or via the above-mentioned application form) and submit all required supporting documentation.
  • Step 2: Successful applicants will be required to take the Grade 6 Foundation exam in Mathematics and English in December 2022.
  • Step 3: Successful applicants will be invited to interviews, which will take place between February and March 2023. Step 4: Applicants will be invited to placement schools for interviews.
  • Step 5: Scholarships will be awarded to applicants who receive recommendations from placement schools.
  • Step 6: After the scholarship is awarded, the Foundation, placement school, and Scholar’s custodian will sign the Memorandum of Agreement.

Whether they are successful or not, all applicants will receive feedback on their scholarship application via SMS.

Documents Required

Candidates must submit the mentioned documents along with the application form. If any document is missing or false, the application will not be considered.

  • A certified copy of your birth certificate in its entirety
  • A certified copy of your identification document
  • A recent passport photograph (black and white)
  • Certified copies of your ID documents for parents or guardians
  • Report for Term 4 in Grade 5 (certified copy)
  • Report for Term 1 or Term 2 in Grade 5 (certified copy)
  • Parents or legal guardians Proof of income (certified copy of most recent payslips and 3 months bank statements if employed; certified copy of income tax statement and 6 months business account bank statements if self-employed; original affidavit if unemployed; certified copy of pension income if applicable).
  • If both parents have died: the death certificate
  • If the parents are divorced, the divorce decree must be followed.
  • If you live with a legal guardian, you must provide proof of legal guardianship.
